FACULTY Cardiothoracic surgeon Director, Aortic Surgery, Cedars-Sinai Medical Centre, USA Dr. Catarino is a cardiothoracic surgeon who graduated from Oxford University Medical School and trained at the Royal Brompton Hospital in London and at Duke in North Carolina. He was Director of Transplantation and Mechanical Circulatory Support at Royal Papworth Hospital in Cambridge, England, where he worked for 12 years. He introduced minimally invasive lung transplantation and was responsible for the national implementation of DCD heart transplantation, including in pediatrics. In June 2019 he performed the World’s first DCD heart-lung transplant. His research focuses on the preservation, optimization and assessment of donor organs. Dr Catarino is also a specialist aortic surgeon, and established one of the first dedicated aortic surgery programs in the UK. He has a substantial experience with the frozen elephant trunk procedure, and helped to develop continuous normothermic myocardial perfusion during arch surgery. In June 2020, he moved to Cedars-Sinai where he is Director of Aortic Surgery, and has particular responsibility to develop the lung transplant program.
